Why 6 to 8 sessions: the hair growth cycle

Hair grows in three phases, and laser energy can only disable a follicle in the anagen, or active growth, phase, when the follicle is still attached to its blood supply. Catagen follicles are detaching and shutting down, and telogen hairs are resting before they shed. Because only a share of your hair is in anagen on any given day, each session catches just the follicles that were active that week. That is why a series is standard practice rather than an upsell. Facial hair cycles faster, so those areas are usually spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, while body areas run 6 to 8 weeks.

Your skin type sets your settings

At your consultation we assign your Fitzpatrick skin type, from I (very fair, always burns) to VI (deeply pigmented, rarely burns). That number drives every setting on the laser. This is where the Neo Elite matters for dark skin: its 650-microsecond Nd:YAG energy can be set high enough to disable a coarse follicle without overheating the melanin around it, so type V and VI skin is treated at full effectiveness rather than turned away or underpowered to avoid burns.

Step by step on treatment day

1. Shave ahead. Shave the area 24 to 48 hours before your session. Shaving keeps the follicle intact under the skin where the laser can reach it; waxing and plucking remove it.
2. Clean skin. Arrive with the area free of lotion, oil, deodorant, and makeup.
3. Eyewear on. You and your provider both wear protective glasses for the entire session.
4. The passes. The handpiece moves over the area and you feel quick warm snaps, comfortable enough that most clients skip numbing.
5. Cool and go. We soothe the skin, apply SPF if the area is exposed, and you leave ready for the rest of your day.

What you do between sessions matters as much as the treatments themselves, especially for brown and Black skin where post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the main risk. Follow this plan and your skin stays both smooth and even:

• No sun and no tanning beds between sessions; wear SPF 30 or higher daily on any exposed treated area
• No plucking and no waxing between sessions; shave only when hair returns
• Moisturize treated skin and skip scrubs and harsh exfoliants
• Avoid retinoids and exfoliating acids for 3 days before and 3 days after each session
• Expect shedding: treated hairs push out over 1 to 3 weeks and can look like new growth; let them fall out on their own
